A state of matter is a distinct form in which matter can exist. There are 4 states of matter: solids, liquids, gases, and plasma. But let's discuss about solids, liquids, and gases first. In a solid, the particles are tightly packed together. The particles are held together by the forces of attraction. The forces of attraction are so strong that the particles cannot move freely, but they can vibrate. As a result, a solid has a stable, definite shape, and a definite volume. Solids can only change their shape by force, as when broken or cut. Solids however can change into liquids by being heated, which causes the particles to vibrate strong enough to escape the forces of attraction. This process of changing is called melting.
